Family health and the kitchen herb garden
There is nothing like maintaining good health for your family by using herbs. In fact an herb garden could be a family project. You can have either an outdoor garden, or an indoor one. For an outdoor garden, you will need to identify an area as near the kitchen as possible, which gets good sunlight, and where there good drainage so that the soil is well-drained. Prepare the area, and work in a 4-inch layer of compost, so that the soil and the compost are well mixed.
Have a small section for the perennials, and another for the annuals. The herbs that you could start with are anise, dill, fennel and coriander. Perennials like oregano, French tarragon, thyme, sage, basil, chives, sweet marjoram, and rosemary grow best when planted as seedlings. The distance between the plants should be at least 18 inches. Prune and harvest regularly, so that they grow well. You get the best flavor from the herbs if you cut them early in the morning.
For an indoor garden, remember that herbs need at least 6 to 8 hours of sunlight. Consequently, you will need to have your garden near a South-facing window. Planter boxes made of terracotta are best. The soil has to be kept well drained, and should be watered lightly. Use compost made up of vegetable peelings, and organic household waste mixed with the soil. Basil, rosemary, sage, mint and parsley grow well indoors.
